In this study we review the literature on strategic change across two opposing theoretical lens: the adaptation and ecological perspectives. After emphasizing the main theoretical tenets behind strategic change considered by each theoretical view, our main interest is in analysing, from a descriptive point of view, a representative number of quantitative and longitudinal empirical studies performed over the last three decades. In our view, this analysis can allow scholars and practitioners to obtain a general and objective assessment of the empirical validity of the theoretical arguments which are upheld from the adaptation and ecological views. We conclude by making some suggestions for future avenues of research on strategic change.
