We present an analysis of a data set consisting of bird flight headings introduced in the ornothological literature by Bruderer & Jenni (1990). The wrapped skew-normal distribution of Pewsey (2000) is initially explored as an underlying distribution for these circular data but is found not to adequately model the empirical distribution. As an alternative, a two component mixture model, in which the wrapped skew-normal distribution appears as one of the components, is proposed.
