An important landmark in the Huelva of the last third of the 19th Century was the creation of the Port Work Board, institution of great implications for the city and the province from the economic, social and political point of view. The historical context was not a chance and it coincided with the mining summit in the province, faced with the industrial expansion, favoured by the arrived of foreign capital. In this state of things, the advance of the port infrastructures had a very meaning role because of the importance of the transport and the communications. The port engineers had before them a hard task: from making suitable the Odiel River for the navigation to managing all kind of port works. With this, it was allowed Port of Huelva to be up to the most modern ports of its age, by the huge trade that it was developed, especially with outstanding european ports.
