    El tema de la culpa es central en la literatura y la cultura de Occidente, pero examinar atentamente la literatura sobre esto puede llevar a sorpresas: la culpa queda más o menos oculta y el culpable difícilmente se siente tan responsable como para expiar con la vida. Sin embargo, en Il cuore delle cose (en su título italiano), la novela japonesa que analizo aquí, es exactamente eso lo que pasa, por múltiples razones, algunas conectadas con las angustias existenciales de su autor, otras con el cambio histórico que le tocó vivir, otras, naturalmente, con la cultura japonesa.

    The guilt of betrayal and the new epoch: Il cuore delle cose by Natsume Soseki. The theme of guilt is central in Western literature and culture, but to analyze carefully the literature about this may surprise: the guilt always is more or less hidden and the guilty rarely feels him/herself responsible till the renounce to life. Nevertheless, in Il cuore delle cose (its Italian title), the Japanese novel I analyze here, exactly this thing happens, for a lot of reasons: some of them are related to its author's existential anguishes, others to the historic moment he and his characters go through, others, of course, to Japanese culture.
