From Las Lobas de arrabal (1920) and its relationship with the decadence one reflects on the changes effected in the narrative of the turn of the century. The modernist novel permeates with artificiality for lyrical effect, which is often achieved through the tension between beauty and ugliness, the sublime and the rabble, the high and the abject. Thus, there arises a black lyricism that is a key piece of Spanish modernism and that has, however, often been neglected and even scorned by the critical discourse.
