A survey of different explanations of memory deficits related to aging is presented. According to some, the decline of cognitive resources explains memory performance. These cognitive resources include working memory capacity, inhibitory efficiency and processing speed. According to other explanations, more specific factors such as metamemory or emotion are responsible for memory performances. These explanations are described, global and analytic approaches are distinguished, and the idea that these explanations can determine our general idea of aging is suggested.
