In this paper, we present studies on information gathering and hypothesis confirmation in the field of social psychology. We introduce a taxonomy of information gathering strategies in terms of confirmation or disconfirmation, diagnosticity or non diagnosticity. We analyze the consequences of hypothesis confirmation, in terms of falsification, self-fulfilling prophecy, and self-image. We then examine the usual explanations. In a following paper, we suggest that confirmatory strategies should be investigated together with interaction goals.
