The void, and randomly moving atoms are two principles used by the Atomists. However, the atomists implicitly extended their atomistic framework by using a third principle, the principle of self-motion of the soul atoms. Another principle which works on the macro level and brings order out of random movement of atoms is the organizing principle of necessity. This is particularly important when explaining the workings of the soul.
