Korea is a nation with an ancient heritage of diverse indigenous folk traditions. In 1962, the South Korean government established the Cultural Property Protection Law(CPPL) as a part of the conservation policy, under which folklore genres are authorized as important intangible cultural properties and folklore performers are designated as living national treasures. The Cultural Protection System is a policy and a set of laws, and as such its breadth of control is deeply reflected in the performers and performances of folklore throughout Korea.
