La conmemoración de los bicentenarios de las independencias en América Latina obliga a España a participar y a definir su papel en la efeméride, tanto por su condición de protagonista de unos mismos hechos históricos como por su vocación iberoamericana. Su presencia responde, igualmente, a los factores y condicionantes de la política exterior gubernamental hacia la región así como a una reflexión ciudadana, aún inicial, donde participan opinión pública, mundo académico, medios de comunicación y social civil. Estos discursos y argumentos generan visiones, proyectos y, en definitiva, políticas cuyo objetivo debería ser el contribuir a imaginar y construir el espacio iberoamericano del siglo XXI. Así, el reto del bicentenario –para España y desde España– será el esfuerzo intelectual y político de repensar lo iberoamericano.

The bicentenary commemoration of the independences in Latin America forces Spain to participate and define its role in this event due to the high profile in those historical facts and due to its Latin American vocation too. In the same way, its presence corresponds to factors and determining factors of Spanish foreign policy in this area as well as an initial public awareness, in which public opinion, academic world, media and civil society participate. These speeches and arguments generate views, plans and, in short, policies whose objectives should be the contribution to imagine and build the Latin American area in the 21st century. So the bicentenary challenge –for Spain and from Spain– will be the intellectual and political effort of thinking about the Latin American world again.
