    Este trabajo pretende describir las tendencias en la investigación sobre empresa familiar como disciplina científica. Para ello, se efectúa un estudio bibliométrico de las revistas indexadas en el Social Science Citation Index en las categorías “business”, “business finance” y “management” durante el periodo 1961-2008. Diversos indicadores de actividad muestran la evolución del nivel de publicaciones, las revistas y universidades más implicadas en la disciplina, y las metodologías aplicadas. Asimismo, mediante un análisis de contenidos se identifican los principales temas abordados y potenciales líneas futuras de investigación.

    This paper aimed at describing the trends of family business as a research discipline. A bibliometric study is carried out of any journal of the categories “business”, “business finance” and “management” of the Social Science Citation Index during the period 1961-2008. Several indicators of activity show the evolution of publication activity, the most representative journals and universities in the field, and the methodologies applied. Also, an analysis of contents enables the identification of the main themes analyzed and potential avenues for future research.
