Although traditional forces must of course be moderated, one can clearly state that comfort was not a characteristic of popular housing in Castile. The demand for new manufactured products started slowly, related to the market, the availability of money and the appearances, and only gradually reached more segments of society. Workers tended to satisfy only their basic needs, and clothes, furniture, decoration, plates and table cloths were not always seen as indispensable. By looking at the demand for new products of the popular sectors of society, we deepen our knowledge of the “social history of consumption” and of the history of material culture during the Ancien Régime.
