Reading the anonymous 13th century works Le Roman de Troie en prose (Prose I) and Les Faits des Romains with a modern critical perspective highlights their ambiguous status and generic ambivalence at a time when history was even more uncertain of its disciplinary particularities, and at the same time indicates the longstanding nature of the history/story dialectic.
