A forgotten tradition of four-verse moralistic poems, a genre much practiced in France from 1535 to 1650, deserves literary re-discovery, especially as, as a collection gathering the works of Pibrac, Favre, Matthieu and Guichard shows, these poems move from the strictly moralistic to a deathobsessed baroque, through the theme of vanitas.
