  • Valjean and Cosette meet on Christmas night, when the were-wolves and other creatures are out... In bringing together the calendar and the figure of Cosette as were-child, Hugo semantically over-invests the text and commits his characters to specific evolutions within the novel's timeframe, while using the calendar's symbolism and popular systems of belief.
