«Sobre el estado de la Ley de Maxwell K=n2». Un artículo de Blas Cabrera redactado en 1903

    El análisis de un texto de Blas Cabrera Felipe de 1903 permite apreciar sus concepciones en el contexto científico de la época. Se ha visto el inicio de un posible proyecto de investigación en fisicoquímica y, asimismo, se pone de manifiesto su método de investigación teórica, basada en la consulta y análisis de datos publicados por diversos investigadores europeos utilizados para demostrar la exactitud de la ley de Maxwell K = n2 que relaciona –en el marco de la teoría electromagnética– el índice de refracción y la constante dieléctrica, en el que aporta algunos cálculos originales.

    Se ha realizado un detallado seguimiento –y se han completado detalles– de los artículos y autores consultados por Cabrera para la redacción del artículo que se comenta. Se plantea la situación de Cabrera en la comunidad científica de Madrid y la posible relación de ésta con la investigación europea. Se pone de manifiesto la importancia de los textos de Cabrera para intentar averiguar sus concepciones iniciales y su evolución diacrónica posterior. Se menciona el uso de la física clásica –mecánica y electromagnetismo– como marco de los trabajos científicos en la frontera de los siglos xix y xx. Se tiene en cuenta, además, el papel dinamizador de la Sociedad Española de Física y Química para elevar el nivel de la investigación científica en el ámbito universitario y la influencia que de su espíritu de progreso pudo recibir Cabrer

    The analysis of Blas Cabrera’s text of 1903, allows estimating his conceptions in the scientific context of the epoch. The beginning of a possible project of investigation in physicochemistry has been seen and, likewise, there is revealed his method of theoretical research, based on the consultation and analysis of information published by diverse European researchers used to demonstrate the accuracy of Maxwell’s law K= n2 that relates –in the frame of the electromagnetic theory– the index of refraction and the dielectric constant, in that he contributes with some original calculations. A detailed follow-up has been realized –and details have been completed– of the articles and authors consulted by Cabrera for the draft of the article that is commented. Cabrera’s situation appears in the scientific community of Madrid and the possible relation of this one with the European investigation.

    There is revealed the importance of Cabrera’s texts to try to verify his initial conceptions and his later evolution. There is mentioned the use of the classic physics –mechanics and electromagnetism– as frame of the scientific works in the border of the 19th and 20th century. There is born in mind, in addition, the revitalizing role of the Spanish Society of Physics and Chemistry to raise the level of the scientific research in the university area, and the influence of its spirit of progress that Cabrera could receive from
