La Laguna que había sido, desde su fundación, la ciudad principal de Tenerife, comienza a principios del siglo xix a padecer una profunda crisis y pasa a ocupar una nueva posición en la red urbana insular. Este proceso, que se venía gestando desde finales del siglo xviii, deriva en una atonía demográfica y urbana que se prolonga a lo largo del siglo xix. A pesar de ello, la ciudad realiza un importante esfuerzo de modernización en equipamientos e infraestructuras, al tiempo que rehabilita el viejo caserío. At the beginning of the 19th century La Laguna, that was since its foundation the main city of Tenerife, starts to suffer a deep crisis and occupies a new position in the insular urban network.
