Resumen de Tecnología, diseño y cultura material

  Este artículo intenta responder a la pregunta sobre la forma como nos relacionamos con las nuevas tecnologías desde la perspectiva de la cultura material y los estudios de diseño. Al explorar la materialidad de la tecnología se hace evidente que existe un componente no tecnológico desarrollado por métodos no científicos de pensamiento que es en últimas el que nos permite establecer un tipo específico de relación con la tecnología. Este componente es propuesto por el diseño y por tanto es el resultado de un proceso de pensamiento creativo antes que uno científico. Así, entonces, es el diseño (o la forma) de los objetos tecnológicos lo que permite relacionarnos con la tecnología en tres niveles: simbólico, funcional y estético. De la misma forma, el diseño es uno de los responsables del proceso de domesticación de la tecnología. Tomando el Ipod como ejemplo a lo largo del artículo, se explica como el diseño del objeto es el que permite provocar cierto tipo de relación en tanto que no basamos nuestras relaciones con la tecnología en su ámbito intangible, sino en la materialización de ésta a través de los objetos diseñados.

  This article attempts to answer the question on how we interact with new technologies from the perspective of material culture and design studies. By exploring the materiality of technology becomes clear that there is a non-technological component developed by non-scientific methods of thought, which is ultimately what allows us to establish a specific type of relationship with technology. This component is proposed by design disciplines, and therefore it is the result of a creative thinking process rather than a scientific one. Thus, it is the design (in other words, the shape of the things) of the technological objects what allows to engage with technology on three levels: symbolic, functional and aesthetic. In the same sense, design is also one of the leaders of the domestication of technology. By taking the iPod as an example throughout the article is explained how the design of the object is what allows to provoke some sort of relationship as we do not base our relations with the intangible side of technology, but with the materialization of this through designed objects.
