Le fleuve, porteur d´images urbaines: formes et enjeux

    The river is becoming an important image of urban areas : over the last two decades its banks have become a major element of urban scenery. The forms and challenges of this form of landscape construction are the subject of a PhD thesis, the first results of which are presented in this article. They are based on a comparative study of two towns in the South of France - Perpignan and Montpellier, crossed respectively by the Têt and Lez rivers -, to test the hypothesis of the structuring role played by rivers in urban development projects. The analysis shows that the river is a key factor in urban policy, directing current urban restructuring and introducing a new type of public space.

    Le fleuve est en passe de jouer un rôle d'image urbaine : ses berges sont devenues en deux décennies une pièce essentielle du décor urbain. Les formes et les enjeux de cette construction paysagère en cours font l'objet d'une thèse, dont cet article expose les premiers résultats. Ceux-ci s'appuient sur une approche comparative entre deux villes du Midi français, Perpignan et Montpellier, traversées respectivement par la Têt et le Lez, pour vérifier l'hypothèse du rôle structurant du fleuve dans le projet urbain. Il ressort de cette analyse que le fleuve est convoqué comme argument des politiques publiques de la ville, infléchissant les réorganisations urbaines actuelles, et inaugurant un nouveau caractère d'espace public.
