Analysis of core competencies and challenges in the smartphone industry

    • Smartphone industry is in its rapid growth stage and full of opportunities and challenges. In order to understand what practices and core competencies are necessary to achieve world-class standards, this research is to study the core competencies of smartphone industry. We make in-depth analysis of core competencies for smartphone companies as well as provide insights for key success factors to those new ventures that just enter this market. Furthermore, regional business model differentiation comparison will be also discussed by looking at European, US and Asian Pacific regions for successfully managing on R&D, innovation, and technology since this investigation would effect in relation to competitive component of smartphone industry.

      The research results show that five factors are most important of core competencies in smartphone industry including technology management system, product development strategies, value chain management, brand strength and perception, and partnerships with suppliers and customers. In addition, the results suggest that new ventures can take into consideration the most important five factors as its core competences evolution. They can help new ventures and existing vendors to challenge higher market share and reach their goals by building those important factors in the smartphone industry. Moreover, core competencies as key considerations are critical for both companies and new ventures navigating the challenges of the smartphone industry, these can also be companies� goals that lead to improved performance.
