    El artículo analiza las visiones de los grupos demócratas y republicanos del período isabelino acerca de la naturaleza de los sexos, sus funciones, aptitudes y destinos, el lugar que cada uno debía ocupar en las esferas pública y privada y las relaciones que debían existir entre ellos. En el centro del análisis se sitúa la institución familiar, que demócratas y republicanos consideraban la célula básica de la sociedad y fundamental a la hora de contemplar cualquier proyecto de reforma de esta última. No solo porque constituía un espacio primigenio de socialización, en el que se transmitían unos determinados valores morales y cívicos a los futuros ciudadanos, sino porque era el ideal, el modelo al que tenía que adecuarse el ordenamiento político y social en el proyecto democrático.

    The article analyzes the visions of Spanish Democratic and Republican groups of the period 1840-1868 in what concerns the nature of the sexes, their functions, aptitudes and destinies, the place that each occupied in the public and private spheres, and the relations that should exist between them. At the centre of the analysis is the institution of the family, which both democrats and republicans considered the basic unit of society and fundamental when they contemplated any reform project. This was not only because it constituted the primary space for the socialization of future citizens, but also because it was the ideal, the model to which the political and social ordering in the democratic project had to conform, and the incarnation of the very national community.
