  In a context of growing competition among tourism destinations, it becomes very important to identify the reasons why tourists choose to visit some destinations instead of others. The empirical study presented in this paper analyses the role that the visitors' motivations play in the decision to visit some protected areas. The research focus on two protected areas located in Portugal - the Peneda-Gerês National Park and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The study shows that motivations had an important influence in the decision to visit the protected areas instead of other destinations and reveal that the motivations for visiting different protected areas can be considerably different.

  Num contexto de crescente competição entre os destinos turísticos torna-se muito importante identificar as razões pelas quais os turistas escolhem visitar determinados destinos em detrimento de outros. O estudo empírico apresentado neste artigo analisa o papel que as motivações dos visitantes desempenham na decisão de visitar áreas protegidas. A pesquisa foca-se em duas áreas protegidas localizadas em Portugal - o Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês e o Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. O estudo mostra que as motivações têm uma importante influência na decisão de visitar áreas protegidas em detrimento de outros destinos e revela que as motivações para visitar diferentes áreas protegidas podem ser consideravelmente diferentes.
