The objective is to propose a simple procedure, compared to the finite-element method, toselect and optimize the dominant mode of thrusting in accretionary wedges. The methodology, referredto as the Equilibrium Element Method (EEM), is an application of the internal approach of limitanalysis, which leads to the determination of the lower boundary on the tectonic force and the associatedoptimal stress distribution. The EEM has the advantage of requiring only a fraction of the computationalpower necessary for the FEM.
