    En este artículo se aborda el problema administrativo y económico del servicio médico-asistencial en la ciudad de Caracas y sus alrededores (1870-1888).

    El estudio administrativo comienza con la creación de la Casa de Beneficencia de Caracas, sus diferentes reglamentaciones y los cambios que introdujo el decreto de 19 de junio de 1877. El problema económico aborda la renta de los hospitales, las asignaciones presupuestarias y demás fuentes de ingreso que tenían estos institutos, incluyendo la venta de propiedades de la beneficencia y su conversión en billetes de la Deuda Nacional Consolidada, política financiera que gradualmente liquidó las tendencia benéficas y caritativas para financiar y administrar los hospitales caraqueños. De esta manera se impusieron los criterios de modernización sobre los tradicionales, adquiriendo el Estado mayor responsabilidad en la prestación del servicio médico-asistencial en Venezuela.

    In this paper we deal with the administrative and economic issue of the welfare medical service in Caracas and its surroundings (1870-1888.) The administrative study begins with the creation of the Caracas Welfare House and its different regulations and changes brought about by the 19 of July 1877 Decree.

    The economic issue tackles the hospitals rent, the budgetary allocations and other sources of income that these institutions had. These alternative sources of income include the sale of welfare properties and its conversion into papers of the National Consolidated Debt, an economic policy that gradually liquidated the welfare and charity trends in order to finance and manage the hospitals in Caracas. This way, modernization criteria were imposed over the traditional ones, leaving the responsibility for rendering healthcare and welfare services in Venezuela in the hands of the State.
