The gradual expansion of the Roman-canon law and the increase of lawsuits at ecclesiastical courts paved the way for the creation of the office of the official. The official acts in place of the bishops in cases of the ordinary and noncontentious jurisdiction as well as in cases of the penal jurisdiction. As supreme judge of the diocese the bishop appoints the official as head of the court, where judges, assessors, notaries and proctors support him. The paper presents a list of officials in the old archbishopric of Trier, wich are known until now. Due to the extensiveness of this circuit in this archbishopric there were two "curiae", on in Trier, and the other in koblenz.
