The case law of the supreme courts in europe strongly influenced the development of the "ius commune" and the "ius publicum".In this context the role of the Sacra Romana Rota has to be mentioned. A huge contribution to make the case-law of this papal court accessible for early modern legal practice and jurisprudence was made by Giovanni Battista de Luca, an advocate working at the Curia and later cardinal. His life and works, in particular his famous "Theatrum veritatis et iustitiae" and the method of "giurisprudenza pratica" practiced by him, form the main topics of this paper.
