Gritille is a mound located on the right bank of the Euphrates River in southeastern Turkey, in an area to be flooded by a dam planned for completion by 1990. The first season of excavation has revealed remains of settlements ranging in date from early Neolithic to medieval. Two phases of occupation are discussed here, the Neolithic and the Bronze Age; both of these phases show relationships with sites located to the south and east. Gritille may have owed its long-continued occupation to its location at a crossing of the Euphrates.
