In this article, our main purpose is to discuss the rapport between the spread of Christianity and the increase of the religious intolerance in the Later Roman Empire. In order to do it, we highlight the clash between John Chrysostom and the Jews which takes place in Antioch at the end of the 4th Century, as well as the possibility of labeling John as the forerunner of the Christian anti-Semitism.

Neste artigo, temos por finalidade discutir a relação existente entre a ascensão do cristianismo na Antiguidade Tardia e o acirramento da intolerância religiosa. Para tanto, enfocamos o enfrentamento que, em finais do século IV, João Crisóstomo estabelece com os judeus de sua cidade natal, Antioquia, bem como a pertinência de se considerar o nosso autor o precursor do antisemitismo cristão
