    Resumen El término « margen » tiene pocas ocurrencias en la prosa española de los siglos XVI y XVII. Llamativamente, Mateo Alemán la emplea en el umbral de su obra magistral, el Guzmán de Alfarache.

    Más allá de los significados que surgen inmediatamente � el margen de la hoja del libro de la vida de un marginal, el margen de este libro de cuentas y de cuentos de un autor que fue contador � , investigamos el concepto de « margen » en relación con el de euconomía que estructura « poesía » e « historia » en esta novela.

    The word ¿margin¿ is not frequent in 16th and 17th c. prose in the Spanish language. Yet Mateo Alemán places it at the very opening of his masterpiece Guzmán de Alfarache. Which invites interrogations as to its possible meanings, beyond the literal (the margin of the sheet of paper hosting the narrative of the life of a marginal character, the margin of the book of accounts of an author who was also an accountant). Such meanings have to be investigated in relation with the concept of euconomía, which frames the poesis and diegesis of the novella.
