La particularidad del Túnel de El Regajal reside en el marco geológico-geotécnico en el cual se engloba. Por un lado, la mayor parte del túnel se excavó en materiales salinos que conforman un ambiente extraordinariamente agresivo para el hormigón y con problemas de disolución y riesgo de fuertes hinchamientos. Por otro lado, el resto del túnel se excavó en materiales arcillosos de mala calidad. Todas estas circunstancias obligaron a diseñar complejos procesos constructivos durante la ejecución del túnel con unos revestimientos estructurales de gran rigidez que, en muchos casos, debían quedar finalizados muy cerca del frente de excavación.

The peculiarity of the Regajal tunnel resides with the geological and geotechnical context in which it is included. On the one hand, most of the tunnel was excavated in saline materials representing an extremely aggressive environment in the concrete and with problems of dissolution and a high risk of swelling. On the other hand, the rest of the tunnel was excavated in clayey materials of poor quality. All these circumstances forced us to design a complex construction process during the execution of the tunnel with a very rigid structural lining and in many cases to be completed near the excavation face.
