    In this article I reflect on the representations of America, its nature and culture, contained in letters written by Domingo Faustino Sarmiento in his travels from 1945 to 1947. Later publication of Facundo: civilization and barbarism, and carried out in order to meet the educational system of Europe, these journeys and the letters they write in this interregnum, unveiled a landscape and built environment and striking the imagination of some intellectuals and learned men Ibero Americans. Thus this paper seeks to examine ways of seeing and describing the American South developed by Sarmiento in his passage through the continent, establishing a relationship between letters and Facundo: civilization and barbarism

    Neste artigo busco refletir sobre as representações da América, sua natureza e cultura, contidas nas cartas escritas por Domingo Faustino Sarmiento em suas viagens de 1945 a 1947. Posteriores à publicação de Facundo: civilização e barbárie, e realizadas com o objetivo de conhecer o sistema educacional da Europa, estas viagens e as cartas que escreve nesse interregno, desvelam uma paisagem e ambiente construídos e marcantes no imaginário de alguns intelectuais e homens letrados Ibero-americanos. Destarte neste texto pretende-se examinar as formas de ver e descrever essa América meridional elaboradas por Sarmiento em sua passagem pelo continente, estabelecendo uma relação entre as cartas e Facundo: civilização e barbárie
