En este trabajo, hemos discutido algunas ideas en las cuales se pone . de manifiesto una cierta confusión entre el concepto de geminación y el de tensión consonántica. Hemos tratado de demostrar que ambos conceptos son completamente diferentes. Desde el punto de vista fonético, el alargamiento de las consonantes tensas (C*) es una manifestación de la tensión fisiológica que interviene en su producción; mientras que el alargamiento de las geminadas (C:) es simplemente el tiempo que corresponde a dos realizaciones idénticas y contiguas. Las geminadas son largas acústicamente pero no-tensas articulatoriamente; mientras que las tensas son también largas acústicamente pero también tensas articulatoriamente yen ambos casos respecto a sus correlatos no-tensos o no-geminados. El acortamiento de la vocal ante las tensas es uno de los criterios acústicos más importantes que hemos presentado para distinguir las consonantes tensas de las geminadas.

In this paper we have reviewed sorne ideas about the phonetic concepts of gemination and tenseness and wanted to start by clarifying the widespread confusion around these two concepts. We have tried to show that, phonetically, both concepts are completely different. The lenghtening of tense consonants (C*) is an acoustic manifestation of the physiological tenseness involved in their production but the lenghtening of geminates (C:) is just a tlme-summation of two identical and continued articulations. So geminates are acoustically long but not articulatory tense. On the other hand, tense consonants are also acoustically long but articulatory tense. The time-reduction of the preceding vowel is one of the most important acoustic parameters we presented to differentiate both categories of consonants.
