In the last third of the 20th century, Andalusia experienced social and cultural changes which can be called revolutionary. Andalusian society developed a heightened consciousness own identity and uniqueness. Without breaking with rest of Spain, Andalusians enhanced manifestations of their regional culture by supporting ceremonial and religious activities. They also speeded up secularization. The rural-urban dichotomy began to lose salience. Regional authorities also promoted universal access to health care and education and to social services which are now regarded as inalienable rights. Women now enjoy equal status with men both in law as in social and cultural affairs. Family structure became more nuclear: parents and children only. Paternal authority diminished, civil marriage caught up the religious marriage in popularity.
