Current theories about the evolution of social inequality during the Iron Age in NW Iberia have implications about the distributional pattern of settlements that are not always empirically testable and require pieces of information that will never be available due to the specific nature of the archaeological record. In this paper we analyze the decision of location of hillforts in the Castro Culture in a game-theoretic setting that allows us to move the debate about societal dynamics to a clearer and simpler structure. We critically expose the limits and possibilities of the application of Rational Choice to spatial archaeology and review the evidence for and against the competing theories.
