Alexander Kämärä, Johanna Yliskylä-Peuralahti, Ulla Tapaninen

  • Security of supply involves all the activities that are undertaken to secure a nations functioning and the welfare of its citizens in case of major disturbances and emergency situations. Sea ports are the most crucial point in the Finnish supply chains. Approximately 80% of the countrys foreign trade traffic is ship borne. The purpose of this study is to describe the capacities of Finlands main ports and to provide an overview of the stevedoring companies operations models in case of a disruption situation in the ports. The study revealed that only a small part of stevedoring companies volumes is suitable for alternative routing. This is due to the companies dependency on the infrastructure of a particular port. On the other hand, tendency is towards bigger ports, which are able to handle many different cargo types and provide more flexible environment for the port operators.
