The history of blood transfusion in France between the years 1940 to 2000 exemplifies the changes in the status of blood which result from changes brought about by scientific discoveries, therapeutic innovations and the expectations of doctors and patients. Since it is illegal to sell blood it falls to the state to organise free and anonymous blood transfusions which retain the voluntary character of blood giving. However, changes in techniques, the growth of new therapies and health risks have, since the 1990’s, necessitated reforms which nowadays situate blood transfusion between the state and the market.

L'histoire de la transfusion sanguine en France des années 1940 aux années 2000 est exemplaire de la transformation du statut du sang sous l'effet des découvertes scientifiques, des innovations thérapeutiques et des attentes des médecins et des malades. Parce que le sang ne peut être vendu, il incombe à l'État d'organiser la transfusion de manière à préserver le don du sang bénévole, anonyme et gratuit. Le changement technique, l'essor de nouvelles thérapeutiques, le risque sanitaire ont imposé des réformes, depuis les années 1990, qui positionnent aujourd'hui la transfusion entre l'État et le marché.
