Le mensonge a très mauvaise réputation dans la philosophie. Nous retraçons ici une brève histoire de l'interdiction de mentir dans la pensée philosophique en essayant de montrer la spécificité de l'acte linguistique de mentir par rapport à d'autres actes linguistiques qui ne se conforment pas à la vérité. L'interdiction du mensonge, de dire le faux lorsqu'on connaît le vrai, dépend du lien métaphysique quasi sacré que la tradition philosophique occidentale, de Platon à la philosophie du langage de nos jours, établit entre sujet, langage et monde.

In philosophy, lying has a very bad reputation. The history of the prohibition on lying is retraced and the specificity of linguistic lying as opposed to other speech acts which are not in accord with the truth is examined. The prohibition on lying, i.e. uttering untruths when one knows the truth, is based on the semi sacred metaphysical link between the subject, language and the world. It is to be found in the western philosophical tradition since Plato and continues right up to the present in the contemporary philosophy of language.
