  The great aggiornamento of the sixties affected every field, including that of literary criticism. Separated from life, confined to enclosed and dusty spaces, airless, it had been living symbiotically with works whose interest lay practically only in being the object of exams or academic contests at the end of the year. Not a word, or if that then a demeaning or evasive one, about the mildly recent texts which, in a confused way, were managing to speak to the adolescents we then were, about the writers who were alive and breathing. And then we came across the first works of Jean-Pierre Richard, who was living apart from the French academic world, abroad - who was living. Forty-five years later I can remember how fresh, bright, tasty the pages he was giving us felt.

  Le grand aggiornamento des années 1960 a touché tous les domaines, y compris celui de la critique littéraire. Séparée de la vie, confinée dans des lieux poussiéreux, sans air, elle vivait en symbiose avec des oeuvres dont l’examen ou le concours de fin d’année épuisait à peu près tout l’intérêt. Pas un mot, ou alors dédaigneux, évasif, des textes un peu récents qui, confusément, parlaient aux adolescents que nous étions, des auteurs qui respiraient. C’est alors que sont tombés entre nos mains les premiers travaux de Jean-Pierre Richard, qui vivait à l’écart de l’institution, au large, à l’étranger – qui vivait. Quarante-cinq ans plus tard, je me rappelle la fraîcheur, l’éclat, la saveur des pages qu’il nous livrait.
