Resumen de Evaluation of French High Modulus Asphalt (EME) in Pavement Structural Design (MEPDG)

JASON C. WIELINSKI, GERRY A. HUBER

  • Superpave mix design, as commonly used in the United States, is based upon the selection of asphalt binder and aggregates plus volumetric proportioning of the two. Superpave does not contain requirements for engineering properties. Some highway agencies have added empirical properties such as rut testers. A European specification for high modulus mixtures (EME) developed by the LCPC of France includes a dynamic modulus requirement. This paper discusses the design of an American mixture, using American materials, to meet the European specifications for high modulus asphalt mix. Pavement structural design is evaluated using the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) to compare pavement designs using Superpave mixtures and EME mixtures.

Key Words: asphalt mixture performance testing, high modulus asphalt, EME, fatigue, MEPDG, dynamic modulus
