  • Resumen
    • Polypharmacy and medication adherence present a unique challenge for the older adult, their caregiver(s), and the health care team. There appears to be an association in the literature between polypharmacy and poorer medication adherence in older adults. However, the heterogeneity of how adherence is defined in the literature limits the certainty of this conclusion. Nonetheless, improving medication adherence to maximize the therapeutic benefit of pharmacotherapy remains a cornerstone of geriatric care. We discuss strategies for limiting polypharmacy and improving adherence and suggest ideas for future research focused on identifying and translating safe and effective interventions to improve adherence into routine clinical practice.
