    A pesar de sus problemas y limitaciones, los procesos de integración de América Latina implementados bajo el concepto de «nuevo regionalismo» le han permitido a la región fortalecer la cooperación interna y ganar protagonismo en las negociaciones internacionales. Los especialistas de los Balcanes han prestado especial atención a la experiencia latinoamericana, ya que desde el fin de la Guerra Fría ambas regiones atravesaron casi al mismo tiempo procesos de transición a la democracia, con resultados totalmente diferentes: disgregación y conflicto bélico en los Balcanes; integración y paz en América Latina. Frente a ese panorama, los latinoamericanos deberían dejar de lado las visiones eurocéntricas y valorar la importancia de la renovada imagen que proyecta su región.

    Despite its problems and its limitations, the �new regionalism� in Latin America has contributed to strengthening internal cooperation and a greater protagonism in international affairs. Specialists in the Balkan countries have paid special attention to the Latin American experience because, since the end of the Cold War, both regions have experienced a transition to democracy, though with another important difference: accompanied by disintegration and war in the Balkans, integration and peace in Latin America. Taking this into account, the Latin Americans ought to abandon Eurocentric visions and learn to attribute its true value to the renovated image the region projects.
