El tránsito, uno de los grandes problemas de la vida urbana, perjudica sobre todo a los sectores más pobres, que carecen de autos particulares y se ven obligados a utilizar el transporte público. Las vías segregadas para buses, que no se inventaron en América Latina pero que se popularizaron y perfeccionaron en la región, constituyen la respuesta de muchos gobiernos locales a este problema, y hoy funcionan con relativo éxito en varias ciudades brasileñas, en Quito, Lima y Bogotá. La principal ventaja de este sistema es que permite trasladar a una gran cantidad de personas en poco tiempo y a un costo de infraestructura mucho más bajo que el de un metro. Sin embargo, para que funcione adecuadamente, debe diseñarse junto con una reorganización general del sistema de buses.

The traffic, one of the big problems of urban life, is particularly prejudicial for the poor, who do not own cars and are thus obliged to use the public transport system. Separated lanes for buses were not invented in Latin America but were popularized and perfected in the region, becoming the solution for many local governments. They have been relatively successful in several Brazilian cities, as well as in Quito, Lima and Bogota. The main advantage of the system is that it enables many people to be moved in a relatively short time on the basis of construction costs notably less than those involved in building a subway system. Nevertheless, in order to function adequately, this alternative needs to be designed together with a general reorganization of the bus system.
