The aplication of factor analysis (Q-mode), to surficial non consolidated sediment samples of the northern continental shelf at the Gulf of Cadiz, has allowed to establish simultaneously granulometrlcal and mineralogical criteria for the classification of recent detritic sedimentary facies. Two sectors have been differenciated: a northern one, close to the Guadalquivir river mouth, characterized by bioclastic silty clays, related whith the terrigen supplies of this fluvial course, and a southern one that occupies a sector of the shelf located southwards of Cadiz paralell, with quartzitic sandy sediments with a low sedimentation rate, due to the absence of fluvial supplies
