    This essay presents itself as the account of a personal investigation rather than as an academic article, with the intention of focusing on the discovery of the facts and of their probability rather than on pre-established conclusions. It recounts the stages in the confirmation of a hypothesis concerning the role that a painting by Max Ernst may have played in the genesis of the visual idea in Happy Days.
