Este artículo relata cómo asumí el oficio etnográfico, tropezando con elgimnasio de boxeo en Chicago, que es el escenario y el carácter centralde mi estudio del boxeador profesional en el gueto negro norteamericano,y cómo diseñé el libro Entre las cuerdas tanto para desarrollarmetodológicamente como para elaborar empíricamente el concepto clavede habitus de Pierre Bourdieu. Habitus es el tópico de investigación: ellibro hace la disección de la forja de las disposiciones corporales ymentales que componen al pugilista competitivo en el crisol del gimnasio.Pero también es la herramienta de investigación: la adquisición prácticade aquellas disposiciones por parte del analista tiene la función devehículo técnico para penetrar mejor en su producción social y suensamblaje. El aprendizaje del sociólogo es un espejo metodológico delaprendizaje experimentado por los sujetos empíricos del estudio; elprimero es extraído para excavar más profundamente en el último ydesenterrar su lógica interna y sus propiedades subterráneas, y ambos asu vez prueban la robustez y fecundidad del habitus como guía parasondear las fuentes de la conducta social. Apropiadamente utilizado, elhabitus no sólo ilumina la abigarrada lógica de la acción social, tambiénfundamenta las variadas virtudes de la profunda inmersión en, y elentreveramiento carnal con, el objeto de la investigación etnográfica.

This article recounts how I took up the ethnographic craft; stumbled uponthe Chicago boxing gym that is the central scene and character of my field study of prizefighting in the black American ghetto; and designed thebook Body and Soul so as to both deploy methodologically and elaborateempirically Pierre Bourdieu’s signal concept of habitus. Habitus is thetopic of investigation: the book dissects the forging of the corporeal andmental dispositions that make up the competent pugilistic in the crucibleof the gym. But it is also the tool of investigation: the practical acquisitionof those dispositions by the analyst serves as technical vehicle for betterpenetrating their social production and assembly. The apprenticeship ofthe sociologist is a methodological mirror of the apprenticeship undergoneby the empirical subjects of the study; the former is mined to dig deeperinto the latter and unearth its inner logic and subterranean properties;and both in turn test the robustness and fruitfulness of habitus as guidefor probing the springs of social conduct. Properly used, habitus not onlyilluminates the variegated logics of social action; it also grounds thedistinctive virtues of deep immersion in and carnal entanglement with theobject of ethnographic inquiry.
