Resumen de Developing an Open Innovation Growth Strategy for New Technology-Based Firms: The Case of A-Lighting

Antonios D. Livieratos, Demetrios B. Papoulias, Sandra Charreire Petit

  • The emergence of the open innovation model has increased the importance of New, Technology-Based Firms (NTBFs). Based on the principles of (i) self-organization and (ii) access to and management of complementary knowledge, the aim of the study is to present an alternative to the existing growth strategy for NTBFs. The open innovation growth strategy proposed here suggests that NTBFs should not try to become a large corporation, but instead constantly split into new ventures or engage (directly or indirectly) in the development of existing structures. These collaborative platforms are envisaged as the result of mutually beneficial complementary partnerships with customers, suppliers, competitors and/or partners.

The open innovation growth strategy for NTBFs is initially developed on the request of A-Lighting, a NTBF operating in the turbulent environment of the LED lighting industry. The aim of the current research is to present the concept and apply it at A-Lighting in the framework of an ongoing action research project where the authors are implicated both as researchers and practitioners. Presenting a management innovation from an early stage is believed to be an essential part of its development as this could produce valuable feedback and debate (Kaplan, 1998). The study concludes by suggesting further application of the concept.
