  • Landscape issues are often ignored or treated superficially in current design guidance. This paper illustrates how this might be addressed and become part of contemporary planning practice by means of the case-study of Saint Gervais-les-Bains in the Alps in France. This area of exceptional scenery suffers from the pressure of tourism and unsightly developments, which deface the landscape. The paper explains how specific landscape elements can be identified through a survey of the built environment, based on a typomorphological analysis, and how these findings might be integrated into design guidance to protect local distinctiveness.
