he global economic crisis and the deep European and Spanish recession demands corporations to revisit their strategy exhaustively and on an accelerated basis. Low interest rates until 2007 and the low discrimination of financial markets between robust and weak strategies make that those that design strategies forget that the value of corporations only increases when the spread return on capital employed ROCE- and cost of capital increases; hence, any strategic action that does not affect ROCE or cost of capital will not impact value. In fact, the higher the ROCE, the lower the reinvestment rate (and the higher the dividends) to achieve the same growth rate. Chief Strategy Officers should incorporate this basic principle of value creation in the design of exhaustive strategies: operational improvements, growth, restructurings (M&A, divestments), capital structure optimization and adequate investor plan communication. Macroeconomic uncertainties force to test the robustness of the strategy under different scenarios to confirm the resiliency of the value or that the risk-return spectrum (including tail risk) of the strategy is acceptable for shareholders.
