Este tutorial explica el significado de la ciencia de los sistemas a través de un análisis completo del concepto de sistema. A continuación, se trazan sus raíces y se revisan sus tres componentes básicos (conocimiento, metodología y metametodología). Asimismo, se presta atención a la relación de la ciencia de los sistemas con las matemáticas y la tecnología de ordenadores.
El texto argumenta que la ciencia de los sistemas desempeña un papel fundamental para hacer frente a problemas complejos y que los métodos de simplificación forman el núcleo de la metodología de sistemas. Por último, se resumen algunos desarrollos y tendencias recientes.

The meaning of systems sciencie is explicated by a thorough analysis of the concept os a system. The roots of sstems science are then traced and its three basic components (knowledge, methodology and metamethodology) overviewed. A special attention is given to the connection of systems science to mathematics and computer technology.
It is argued that systems science plays a fundamental role in dealing with complexity of systems of our current interest and that simplification methods form the core of systems methodology. Recent developments and trends in systems science are overviewed. It is shown that systems science contributes a new perspective to science, which is complementary to the perspective of traditional science.
