The results of the research about the construction of gender in the professions during the government of Porfirio Díaz, - the masculine or feminine character attributed to the professional spaces and activities -, are shown in this article as an element that may explain the great concentration of women in teaching activities (and less frequently in odontology), and their rare presence in medicine and law. Teaching in the basic level was first conceived as a profession that was very close to maternity, and that is why it was considered an ideal occupation for women. The identification of the mother with the teacher in the imaginary also had an influence on the professional profile of the first generation of female doctors, that were dedicated only to obstetrics, attention to women and children, and frequently combined medicine with a job as a teacher.
